WCIV-TV | ABC News 4 – Officials: Foul play not suspected in toddler’s shooting death

May 6, 2011

Author’s Note:

I have known a toddler in my day whose parents neglected to secure firearms and ammunition. It is a federal law that guns must be sold with trigger locking devices. Why don’t parents secure loaded firearms to prevent their toddlers from accessing them? I support having guns in the home for protection; I do not support negligent parents.

I am sorry for the loss of this child and although the parents allowed a minor to possess a gun which caused her death, I do know how it feels to lose a child in this manner. My own child killed himself by gunshot to the head (also with a .45 caliper handgun), and his father was prohibited to own or possess firearms.

My heart and prayers go out to these parents and their family and friends as they mourn the loss of a young child taken too soon.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – Emergency responders nearly took over the Meadow Run neighborhood Friday.

Investigators with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office stood guard outside the home as a county employee carried the body of a 3-year-old girl, covered with a white blanket and placed it into one of their vehicles.

Dochester County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jimmy Nettles said they responded to the home off of Orangeburg Road at approximately 10:45 a.m.

“We don’t suspect any foul play,” Capt. Nettles said.

Nettles said they found a handgun in the bedroom where they also found the three year old. Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nesbit said the toddler, India Grant was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

In an email sent late on Friday afternoon, Nesbit said the child was killed by her family’s loaded, unsecured .45 caliber pistol that was left on a window sill by the parents’ bed.

Officials said the child’s mother, Amaris Nicole Johnson Grant was home when the shooting happened.

A neighbor who lives across the street, Dana Eiser said she didn’t know the family but is praying for them.

“Its just tragic. Its tragic. I mean, I know as Americans we try to protect ourselves best we can, but mostly we have to protect our children,” Eiser said.
